Fantastic biblical based book about why, today, we see the Holy Spirit turned into a Dog and Pony show (or the charlatans trying)Incredibly page turning but also will drive you back to the Bible and in my experience the scales fell off and I see the truth this book points out in God’s Word.

For me, even better than Strange Fire. GoBack and read where the chaos began! Crazy to see how "prophetic" MacArthur has been exposing the Charismatic Movement almost thirty years after this book was written!

Overall a great job, I just took away a star because he used many extreme charismatically heretical people. That's good. But not all charismatics are heretical, which MacArthur agrees, there are many charismatic Christians. I just wish he would have dealt more in the book with the more conservative exegetical charismatics who don't take things overboard and how to talk with them.

MacArthur takes on a tough issue in this day when so much of the church is "charismatic." He has an excellent section showing the similarity of modern charistmatic and pre-Reformation Roman Catholic views of the Bible, namely, that instead of God's Word and everything else, there is a "sliding gray scale" from God's word to sort-of-God's-word to words-of-pretty-spiritual people, etc. Like the R.C. church, they want to put modern leaders on the same level as the Apostles, with the same level of authority, but they run into the problem that they can't do the same signs and wonders as the Apostles, and so they are forced to promote "sort-of" signs and wonders that pale compared to those of the Apostles, and "sort-of" inspiration of the words of their holy men.The issue of tongues is secondary. The book of Acts makes it clear that "tongues" in that day were real foreign languages, not babble. But the real issue is whether we are going to be students of the Bible or followers of men, even apparently holy men.This is not only "extremist" charismatics. I have known many charismatics and his descriptions fit them well. The charismatic churches very often slide into being authoritarian churches because of their view of authority and the Bible, and I have known people who were seriously burned by this.

The jampires apologize for their thievery, explaining that they are far from home and got hungry. After befriending Sam, they fly him to their homeland. The land of jampires is full of dessert: an enormous jar of jam, mountains of blueberry pie, sherbet snow, ice cream moon, and sponge cake castles. Finally home, the jampires are reunited with their mothers, who are grateful to Sam. They express their thanks via daily baskets of jam-filled doughnuts. The jampires no longer take Sam's jam, but readers should beware. The detailed cartoon illustrations are rendered with pencil and watercolor in a muted palette across full-bleed spreads. About the Author

Trevor Getz is an associate professor of African history at San Francisco State University and the author of Slavery and Reform in West Africa (2004). He has co-authored several textbooks including Exchanges: A Global History. Trained as an Africanist, he was a Fulbright scholar at the University of the Western Cape and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.  He is currently working on both a graphic novel and a monograph of the life of Abina Mansah, a young enslaved woman who liberated herself in 19th century Ghana.

 

Esperanza Brizuela-Garcia is an assistant professor of history at Montclair State University where she teaches courses on African history, methodology and philosophy of history. She was a Rockefeller fFellow at the Center of African Studies of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and is currently working on a book that examines the intersection between African history, world history and the philosophy of history.
