While this was a good attempt to cover a topic that very few books are addressing, the results are not so good. The book is divided in three part, part 1 and 3 really apply to the Pi. Part 2 is about 50% of the book and only addresses programming with scratch and python, without being specific about the Pi and without properly introducing them. I would have really preferred to see almost every programming example to make some use of the GPIO. I do not see the need to separate Part 2 and 3.The book is very repetitive. For most projects, the same topics can be covered many time without adding value. While the author is trying to explain each section of the project in detail, repeating the entire project barely highlighting the part being explained is rather distracting and confusing. The book could be much shorter by removing the excessive redundancy. We could reduce the book by about 30% and seriously improve its readability.The page layout is also something that need serious improvements, many time we do not know what we are reading about until a few pages later. It can also be difficult to differentiate the regular text, from the figure text, and the listing. It is very common that the description of the figures will be repeated word for word in the next paragraph. I am reading another book from Manning and the presentation is much better, improving its readability by ten folds.The book is also seriously inconsistent both in presentation and content. For example, the author chooses to use the prefix BB for breadboard pin and GP for GPIO pin, but then refer to GPIO12 pin, rather than GP12 pin.The author use program examples with some of the worst programming practices. For example, using Ctrl-C to stop a program is usually only done, when the program has an issue and cannot terminate properly but the author chooses this method has the way to stop the execution rather than providing a valuable option. The author even recognize that this may cause issues, and provide additional code to fix the resulting issue.

Great books for both kids and adults who are learning to code with the Pi. Very happy with it so far.

 I remember there wasn't any artbook for the first game so it's great there's one for the second game.The Art of Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is 200-page hardcover concept art book that features mostly character and environment art.If you like the environment, you'll be glad to know that the book shows you a good amount of visual development work that goes behind conceptualising the city. The amount of detail in the design and models look great. As for the feeling, everything appears very high key, very bright, airy, dreamy with the occasional glow. Because of that, it also makes the city looks almost too clean which is actually in line the city of Glass in the game.I like how the sleek and modern the buildings look. There are a couple of more outlandish designs but overall it's not too drastically different from real life cities. The rooftops in the games are much cleaner though. Where do all those people hide their air-conditioning units?There are character designs for the main characters. Faith of course has more pages showing us the different types of clothes, shoes, gloves designs before the final chosen one. Other characters usually have one or two pages, such as Noah, Icarus, Nomad, Rebecca, Dogen, Birdman, Plastic. There are more pages on the enforcers from KrugerSec and the main antagonists. You can see they get a lot of inspiration from military and tactical uniforms and gear.There are a handful of storyboards and action scenes to prevent the book from feeling too static but I think there could be more.The occasional captions talk about the designs but they are usually just one paragraph. The other text would be the lengthy chapter openings. Generally speaking, there's not a lot of text, so don't worry about story spoilers.Overall a good game art companion. TL,DR: Its a good book, lots of architecture and scenery, not much text for actual concepts.I'm coming from this having not yet played the sequel to the franchise Mirrors Edge. Why did I buy the book if I haven't played the game? Well I wanted to see the concept of the development more than I wanted to play a game that has been hit with mediocrity. I see Art books as a concept of, not purely just art of the subject, but the why and how. Now that its aside:The art book is your standard DarkHorse Art book, Its got a nice front cover design, although the background red shading makes you think its always dirty and stained more than a background. Moving inwards you're greeted with a nice introduction to Glass as the main city point and where the story of Faith is held. After this you'll find text and descriptions dotted around the gorgeous architecture and occasional concepts. What I find very frustrating is that theres a whole page about Faith's shoe design, and some other sections will brilliant highlights of core development, but then all of a sudden nothing else to show. You flick through pages of beautiful concept art and paintings, but there is very little in the way of text. The text that is there is of a high standard, but if you want an insight into why things are in Mirrors Edge, this won't tell you.I bought this book as a student game developer purely for the educational purpose on how parkour is integrated into the environment of games and how it interacts with the player, so I think I got a lot out of the architecture and what concept they did give, but for actual interest of reading its ok.It feels like the book has been written by some writers and artists after the game was finished and they were provided minimal documentation from the lead designers and creative director.If you want a wonderful concept book that runs from sketch to game ready dev, Art of Remember Me is a great pick.
